What You’ll Need
Before you begin, gather these essential tools:
✅ Measuring tape
✅ Level
✅ Pencil or marker
✅ Circular saw with a fine-tooth blade
✅ Oscillating tool
✅ Utility knife
✅ Drill & hole saw drill bits (for pipe cutouts)
✅ Construction adhesive
✅ Silicone caulk
✅ Grout (unsanded)
✅ Grout float & sponge
Step 1: Prepare Your Space
-
Clean the walls where the panels will be installed. Remove soap scum, mildew, or debris.
-
Check for level – your shower base or tub may have a slight slope for drainage. Find the highest point and mark a level line to guide installation.
-
Remove any obstructions like old soap dishes, towel bars, or trim.
🔹 Pro Tip: Six3Tile can be installed over existing tile, as long as the surface is clean and level!
Step 2: Plan Your Layout & Cut Panels
- Dry-fit the back wall panels first to ensure a proper fit.
- Measure and mark cut lines.
- Use a circular saw for straight cuts.
🔹 Pro Tip: Always cut the panels from the same side so that the tile pattern aligns seamlessly.
Step 3: Install the Back Wall Panels
- Apply a zigzag bead of construction adhesive to the back of the panel.
- Press the panel firmly into place and hold for a few seconds.
- The panels tongue and groove create a water tight seal and automatically create a grout line to match the tile pattern.
- Repeat for all back wall panels, ensuring they align properly.
Step 4: Install the Side Panels
- Apply construction adhesive and secure the bottom row of side panels first. Keep the manufactured edge to the outside.
- Align the grout lines with the back wall panels for a seamless look.
- Work row by row, fitting the tongue-and-groove edges together.
- Use a hole saw for plumbing cut-outs.
- Continue stacking panels up the wall until you reach the desired height.
🔹 Pro Tip: Apply adhesive to the back of the panels (not the wall) to avoid drips.
Step 5: Finish with Edging & Grout
- If using trim edging, install it by sliding it into place before the adhesive fully sets.
- Once panels are installed, apply unsanded grout using a rubber float.
- Wipe off excess grout with a damp sponge.
🔹 Pro Tip: Always use unsanded grout to avoid scuffing the surface of your panels.
Step 6: Seal & Enjoy!
- Once the grout is dry, apply silicone caulk to the inside corners and the bottom seam where the panels meet the tub.
- Let everything cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Step back and enjoy your new, modern shower or tub surround!
